Tastefully soulful guitar magic David Lindsay – LAST PASSING OF SUMMER:
My ears are now at the point of being able to recognize music that will truly touch the soul within moments of the first few notes of the opening song… that’s not really as much “braggadocio” as it may sound like, it’s just that I listen to so much music that it becomes second nature… when I reviewed David’s work in issue # 164, he got very high marks from me, but as I listen to the beautiful (and sometimes haunting) vocals on “Chandos Lake” (samples aren’t available yet, but I will come back and add the links in as soon as I’m told that they’ve gone live), I can hear that David’s new realizations are even more stunning than his earlier album; when Jeff Haynes’s magical percussion makes an entrance at about the 2:18 mark, the tune takes you to different dimensions – very moving work!
This new release was (again) done at Will Ackerman’s Imaginary Roads studio… David’s masterful guitar is joined by a stellar cast of players from Will’s talent pool… Eugene Friesen on cello, violin from Charlie Bisharat, Jeff Haynes on percussion, woodwinds from Jill Haley, as well as multi-instrumentalist Tom Eaton and vocal works from Noah Wilding… the recording is superb (as I would expect from Imaginary Roads), and you’ll witness pure perfection from all the players on “To The Sun”… if I were on the voting boards for New Age/Contemporary awards, this wonderful and sensitive piece would surely be nominated.
“Sorrows Of The Moon” features Will on guitar, as well as splendid keyboards from Tom… what you’re really hearing on this stunning composition is a conversation between two guitar masters, with subtle piano shadings emphasizing key points… I loved this piece, and have no doubt you will as well.
David’s solo guitar on the title track, “Last Passing Of Summer”, will evoke images of leaves turning and seasons moving on… lingering overtones help to amplify the feeling.
Of the dozen sonic nuggets offered up for aural adventure, though, it is “Through The Fields” that wins my vote for personal favorite… David’s pacing is perfect, and the tune is full of life & inspiration.
I give David and his players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this most memorable album. Get more information as it becomes available on David’s website. Rotcod Zzaj
